Girl wins 'dowry' case against her father

A court in Kuwait sided with a girl against her father in a case involving accusations by the daughter that he seized the dowry paid by her bridegroom under Islamic law, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The unnamed girl said she had resorted to court after all her “cordial” attempts to regain her KD4,000 ($13,600) dowry failed to persuade her father to give up the money, the Arabic language daily Alwatan said.

“The man told court that he took the money because he believes the money and the daughter are his,” the paper said.

“The girl said she wanted the dowry to furnish her new marriage home…the court ordered the father to immediately give his daughter the dowry money in the first such a court case in Kuwait.”
