Google lights candle for ‘Delhi braveheart’

Google India joined millions of concerned Indians in paying tribute to the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim by lighting a white candle on its homepage.

The search engine’s tribute carries a mouse-over text reading ‘In memory of the Delhi braveheart’.

The 23-year-old gang-rape victim, who passed away in a Singapore hospital on Saturday following a 13-day battle against death, was assaulted on December 16 on a moving bus in the national capital.

The victim was cremated at a private ceremony on Sunday. The brutal incident ignited massive protests across the nation with demand for severe punishment for the culprits and change in the law concerning crime against women.

New Delhi has been dubbed the rape capital of India with the number of reported rapes in the city rising 17 per cent to 661 this year.
