King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia used an audience with local Muslim scholars and dignitaries at his palace to declare that he is the people’s servant.

"My brothers, I am one of you…I am your servant…I am a servant for the small and for the seniors…I pray to God the Almighty to support me to serve my religion and my nation…this is the most important thing to me.”

The official Saudi press agency said the 88-year-old monarch, walking with the help of a stick, made the comments after receiving members of the ruling family as well as Muslim scholars, officials, and dignitaries at his palace in the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah, where he arrived on Saturday.

"My brothers, I appeal for you to thank God for this boon He bestowed on us-- the boon of security, safety, stability and tranquillity…I call upon the small and the senior people to thank their God in any move they take.”
