Kurd rebels-army clash kills 6 in Turkey

Officials say Kurdish rebels have attacked a paramilitary post and a military installation in southeast Turkey, sparking clashes that left three soldiers and three Kurdish militants dead.

The governor's office for Hakkari province, near the border with Iraq, says Wednesday the rebels carried out the simultaneous attacks overnight, using heavy weapons and rocket launchers. It said the military responded by striking back with shells and helicopter gunships.

At least one other soldier was wounded in the fighting.

The attack comes amid a surge in violence in recent months between the Turkish forces and rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which is fighting for self-rule for Kurds in southeast Turkey.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since the group took up arms in 1984.
