Saudi doctors successfully removed a massive tumor from the lower jaw of a local three-year-old boy and fixed a new jaw using tissues extracted from his leg.

The child had been admitted to hospital in Riyadh suffering from jaw pain, a large swelling in the face, and difficulty in breathing, eating and speaking.

Doctors at the King Fahd Medical City in the Saudi capital decided to perform an urgent surgery to save the boy’s life after the tumor blocked his respiratory system, the Arabic language daily Sabq said, quoting the hospital management.

“The operation lasted several hours, during which the doctors removed the whole tumor.

“This has resulted in the removal of more than two thirds of the lower jaw.

“They then used tissues extracted from the boy’s left leg to reconstruct his jaw,” said Dr Ghazi Al Thubaiti, a plastic surgery consultant at the hospital.

“This was one of the rarest operations not only in the region but in the world because such tumor cases are very rare at this age. It was a successful surgery, after which the boy left hospital able to eat, speak and breathe properly.”
