The residents of the Saudi holy city of Makkah consumed more than 40,000 heads of livestock during Ramadan, which ends Thursday, the Saudi Arabic language daily Bab reported on Thursday.

Public abattoirs in Islam’s holiest shrine handled 40,810 animals, including 1,200 camels, 708 cow and nearly 38,900 sheep, the paper said.

The abattoirs will open for longer hours during Eid Al Fitr, starting tomorrow, for even bigger appetites for meat, it said.
