Thieves stalking Muslim pilgrims in Saudi Arabia have pinched the mobile phone of a former Malaysian minister but police managed to recover it two days later, the Saudi Arabic language daily 'Alwatan' reported on Sunday.

The former tourism minister, who was not named, was performing Ramadan pilgrimage in Makkah, Islam’s holiest shrine, this week when he could not find his mobile handset and returned to his hotel in the city, the paper said.

Two days later, police came to his room and handed the surprised minister his mobile phone although he had not informed them about the theft, it said.

“We found the minister’s handset with mobile phone thieves whom we have seized…we saw a message on his phone originating from Malaysia,” the paper quoted Makkah police spokesman, Major Abdul Mohsen Miman, as saying.

“We called that number and were told that the phone belongs to the minister and that he is performing Haj in Makkah. We also got his address here.”
