Man pardons son’s killer on child plea

A Sudanese father who had rebuffed several attempts to persuade him to pardon the killer of his son in Saudi Arabia finally surrendered when a weeping 10-year-old boy threw himself on his lap and begged him for mercy.

In a report from the southwestern province of Hail on Thursday, 'Al Youm' newspaper said the incident took place during a meeting hosted by local dignitaries in a final bid to convince Ahmed bin Mohammed to pardon the killer of his son so he can be saved from the gallows.

“All of the sudden, a boy not exceeding 10 years old started to cry and threw himself on the Sudanese man’s laps…he began to beg him to have mercy and pardon the killer for the sake of his children,” the paper said.

“Immediately, the Sudanese man stood up and declared before all the guests that he is dropping his case and pardoning the killer.”

Under Islamic law, a murderer can be saved from execution if pardoned by the victim’s relatives, who should be paid (diyya) bloody money by the killer.
