A Saudi man ordered paralysed by a local court on a tit-for-tat basis after he was convicted of causing paralysis to another man during a fight 10 years ago has been pardoned in return for blood money, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

The court in the eastern province of Ihsaa ordered the crippling of Ali Al Khawahir after he stabbed Mohammed Al Hazeem during a scuffle and inflicted paralysis in his legs and crippling his sexual and urinating ability.

Relatives and dignitaries have intervened to persuade Hazeem to pardon the defendant but he has rebuffed all mediation efforts.

Last week, he agreed to be paid SRone million after an appeal by Ihsaa’s prince Emir Badr bin Mohammed bin Jawali, who paid SR400,000. The rest was contributed by relatives and other people in the neighborhood.

“The court decided to stop its order to have Khawahir paralysed after he was pardoned by Hazeem,” the Saudi Arabic language daily Ihsaa news said.
