A Saudi newspaper on Thursday published new pictures of the Grand Mosque, the world’s largest mosque, taken by Interior Ministry photographers in air.

“The pictures were taken on Tuesday, Ramadan 27 from Interior Ministry helicopters hovering above the Mosque…they show how great, majestic and wonderful the place is,” the Arabic language daily ‘Ajel’ said.

The Grand Mosque, better known as Masjid Al Haram, surrounds Kaaba, Islam’s most sacred shrine. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims from around the world visit Masjid Al Haram for pilgrimage every year.

The pictures show the famous 600-metre-tall Makkah clock tower, the world's second tallest building.

More than six times larger in diameter than London's famed Big Ben, the clock faces, with the Arabic words "In the Name of Allah" in huge lettering underneath and it is lit with two million LED lights.
