An 83-year-old Saudi man is facing punishment by blinding after he was convicted by a local court of blinding another man when he shot him during a fight.

Wahir Al Harthi was sentenced to blinding on 'eye for eye' basis a few years ago and remained in prison in the Southern Bisha town after the judge decided to give him a chance to reach an out-of-court settlement with the victim’s family.

Sabq newspaper quoted his son Mansour as saying Harthi has been in jail for nearly eight years despite his old age and worsening health.

“What my father needs now is to come home so we can look after him…we appeal for the family of the other man to drop the case and accept a settlement by the reconciliation committee,” he said.
