Motorists in the Saudi city of Makkah committed more than 704,000 traffic offences through 2010, an average 1,928 violations a day.

Police figures published in local newspapers on Sunday showed Saudis were the main culprits as expatriates committed only 54,000 offences.

Around 116,000 offences involved excess speed and reckless driving, over 81,000 driving without the seat belt and 63,000 jumping the red lights.

The statistics showed such violations resulted in 12,724 road accidents, including 10,015 inside the city of around 1.8 million people. The rest took place in the outskirts of Makkah, Islam’s holiest shrine.
