Road accidents caused by widespread violations of traffic rules killed 313 people and injured 551 others in Kuwait during the first 10 months of 2010, the Arabic language Alqabas newspaper reported on Sunday.

The victims were a result of nearly 49,000 road accidents in the emirate of around three million people, the report said.

The death toll is around six per cent above the number of victims in the first 10 months of 2009 but is below the 407 deaths recorded through last year, the paper said, citing figures by the Kuwait Ministry of Interior.

Road mishaps killed 410 in 2008 and 447 people in 2007, the report showed, adding that 416 people died as a result in traffic accidents in 2006 and a record high number of 451 in 2005.

“These accidents were a result of negligence while driving, jumping the red lights, excessive speed, and reckless driving,” the paper said.

Kuwait and other Gulf oil producers are among countries which have the highest traffic accident rates because of persistent violation of road rules and the large number of cars relative to their population.
