Saudi Arabia to monitor Facebook chatting

Saudi Arabia is planning to deploy its most feared Islamic law-enforcing authority online to monitor Facebook chatting in a bid to curb obscene activity, the local 'Sahafaonline' Arabic language newspaper reported on Sunday.

The government King Abdul Aziz University said it would provide training to 300 members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice to allow them to monitor activity on Facebook and other online chat rooms.

“This training programme will be confined to Makkah city but it will then be extended to all parts of the Kingdom,” the paper said, quoting Dr Nouh Al Shahri, head of the Youth Research Centre at the University.

“The programme will enable the Commission to monitor such activities but its function will be restricted to providing advice to those who engage in indecent behaviour in a nice and cordial manner.”
