Saudi divorces wife over cigarette

A Saudi man divorced his wife after finding a cigarette in her bag just three months after their marriage despite her denial the cigarette belongs to her.

The unnamed man was looking into his wife’s bag when he found the cigarette and rushed to his wife to ask her about it.

“She denied the cigarette belongs to her and said she did not know how it came to her bag,” Okaz Arabic language daily said in a report from the southern province of Jazan.

“The husband did not believe her and instantly divorced her despite her repeated pleas.

“Mediation by relatives later failed to persuade the man to restore his wife as he was convinced the cigarette belongs to his wife.”

Saudi Arabia, among the most conservative nations, has one of the world’s highest divorce rates, which exceeded 30,000 in 2012, a daily average of 82.
