A chartered Saudia aircraft with 10 crewmen on board made emergency landing at an airport in the Gulf Kingdom after one of its landing gears failed but no one was hurt, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The aircraft was on a special flight from the western town of Madina to the nearby Red Sea port of Jeddah when the pilot detected the problem and radioed Jeddah airport, Al Watan Arabic language daily said.

The airport went on alert and some flights were suspended as civil defence sprayed special foam on the runway to prevent friction fire, it said.

“Necessary security measures were taken at the airport after the pilot reported that one wheel failed to come out,” the paper said, quoting Khalil Al Khaibari, a spokesman for Saudi Civil Aviation Authority.

“The aircraft landed safely and none of the 10 crew men were hurt…the plane has been towed away for repair and maintenance while the runway was reopened to flight.”
