A large Saudi tribe set dowries [money offered by a groom to his bride] in line with Islamic law, at SR30,000 (Dh30,000) for virgin brides at a tent meeting at its town in the Gulf kingdom, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Arfaa tribe in the Southern town of Baha also decided to fix the dowry for non-virgin brides at SR20,000 (Dh20,000), the Arabic language daily Sabq said.

Dowries were previously set at Dh40,000 and Dh30,000 for virgin and non-virgin brides respectively and the decision to reduce the sum was in line with instructions by the region’s Prince to ease the financial burden on grooms, the paper said.

“The tribal chiefs also agreed at their meeting to encourage mass weddings to cut expenses,” it said.
