Saudi woman appeals for “divorce” help

Published

A Saudi woman is appealing for financial help to break from her “cruel” old husband who is demanding SR50,000 for the divorce.

The Saudi Arabic language daily Alriyadh Friday published what it said was a letter from the woman asking for assistance to end her long-standing ordeal.

The woman, in her 20s, said in her hand-written letter that she had fled her husband, in his 60s, more than four years ago because of his cruelty and sought help from the Saudi Human Rights Association to get her divorced.

“The Association has done nothing and my husband is demanding SR50,000 in return for the divorce…I appeal for all benevolent people to sympathize with my problem and help me get this sum as my financial resources are limited.”

Alriyadh quoted the woman, who it did not name, as saying she had been forced to marry the old man to escape her father’s cruelty.
