Saudis in Riyadh had more than 82,000 sheep in a week

Residents of the Saudi capital Riyadh had more than 82,000 sheep in the first week of Ramadan, an increase of more than 10,000 heads compared with the same period last Ramadan, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Government abattoirs handled 82,349 heads during the first week of this Ramadan compared with nearly 71,009 heads in the first week of last Ramadan, the Arabic language daily 'Aleqtisadia' said.

The slaughtered animals last week included 75,779 sheep, 4,571 camels and 1,999 cow.

Around 84 animals were destroyed after they were found unfit for human consumption.
