A 44-year-old Egyptian man threatened Saudi police trying to arrest him for sorcery to unleash jinn (ghosts) against them. But despite his arrest, he did not carry out his threat.
Police in the Western Saudi town of Makkah raised a house and seized the unnamed sorcerer after reports that he used magic to control a Saudi family.
“He succeeded in controlling the Saudi family by making them believe that there is a treasure under their house and he was trying to unearth it for them,” the Saudi Arabic language daily Sabq said, quoting police sources.
It said the Saudi couple and their two daughters aged 33 and 35 years had allowed the sorcerer to live with them in the same house after he cast a spell on them.
“Police raided the house after receiving reports from neighbours and arrested the man…during arrest, he threatened to bring jinn to the police,” the paper said.
“But his jinn did not protect him as he was arrested and taken to the station…police found many talismans and magic items in the house.”
Witchcraft is strictly banned in conservative Saudi Arabia in line with Islamic law and those convicted of involvement in such acts are severely punished. In some cases, convicted sorcerers have been executed in the Gulf kingdom.
Saudi accidentally runs over 3-year-old daughter
A three-year-old Saudi girl was crushed to death under a car driven by her father who did not notice his daughter was standing behind the vehicle.
The unnamed man was moving his car back to park it inside the house in the northern Saudi town of Arar when he banged into his daughter.
“The father told police he did not see his daughter while he was moving his car back…she was rushed to hospital but was already dead,” Sharq daily said.
