Stop “indecent” dresses: top scholar

Saudi Arabia’s top Moslem scholar has called for measures to stop the spread of what he described as indecent female clothes in the conservative Gulf Kingdom.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Sheikh, the country’s grand Mufti (religious chief), said he made the call after noticing that such dresses have largely spread through female clothes shops across the Kingdom.

“Decent women now find it difficult to get decent clothes after the spread of indecent dresses in shops,” he said, quoted by Saudi newspapers.

“I call on the ministry of commerce to take urgent measures to prevent the spread of such indecent women’s clothes.”

Newspapers said the ministry of commerce immediately sent a letter to the chambers of commerce and industry in the country, asking them to heed the Mufti’s calls and curb the import of “indecent dresses.”

“We have asked all chambers in the country to respect the Mufti’s call and ensure the women’s dresses imported by traders are decent,” said Mohammed Al Shahri, head of the garments committee at the Jeddah chamber.

“We warn all dealers not to go too far in selling indecent female dresses, which must not be open at the chest or abdomen…women’s trousers must also not be very tight or too low at the waist.”’
