A Saudi newspaper has published what it described as stunning pictures of the Masjid Al Haram (Grand Mosque) in Makkah, saying they were taken by its photographer who escorted Saudi police in a routine helicopter patrol over the holy city.

The photographer said he captured photos of the Grand Mosque, the largest in the world, during the day, just before sunset and at night, adding that the Mosque becomes packed most of the time in the last 10 days of the fasting month of Ramadan.

“The pictures were taken nearly 3,000 feet above the Holy Makkah,” Sabq Arabic language daily said. “Words cannot describe such stunning photographs, which represent wonderful and magnificent heavenly painting.”

Spread over nearly 356,000 square metres, the Masjid Al Haram is the world’s largest mosque and Islam’s holiest shrine.
