Tajiks blame Saudis for spread of SMS divorce

A Tajik judge has blamed Saudis for spreading divorces through mobile phone messages, saying such divorces have become widespread in the former Soviet republic, a Saudi newspaper reported on Sunday.

The judge, identified as Ahmed, said many Tajik had recently divorced their wives by sending them the words “your are divorced” three times by a SMS through their mobile phones, Sabq Arabic language daily said.

“Divorces by SMS have become widespread in Tajikistan,” said judge Ahmed, an adviser at the Tajik ministry of justice in the capital Dushanbe.

“The increase came after the media spoke about a Saudi who divorced his wife by SMS…I believe this Saudi man was the first Moslem to use this technique in divorce,” he added, quoted by the paper.

He said Tajik men who have used SMS to divorce their wives have sent the words in both Tajik and Arabic languages.

“The divorced wife would then come to court and present the SMS to the judge…the husband is then summoned to verify the message, after which the divorce is conducted officially at court.”

Judge Ahmed said Tajikistan is considering joining Singapore to ban divorces by SMS, e mail, fax and other similar communication means.
