Teacher shuts AC in 50 deg C to punish girls at Saudi school

A Saudi female teacher turned the air conditioner off in class for more than two hours on a scorching summer day of nearly 50 degrees as a mass punishment of 50 school girls, triggering investigation by education authorities.

The teacher in the preparatory school in the Eastern province admitted she turned the AC off for six minutes, but school girls told the headmistress and their parents they soaked inside the classroom for more than two hours.

They also said the teacher prevented them from using their books to fan their faces and that she shut the room’s door and windows.

“The head mistress said she summoned the teacher and warned her against such practices. She said the teacher told her she turned the AC off for six minutes but that the girls said it was more than two hours,” 'Okaz' daily said.

The paper did not mention reasons for the punishment but quoted education department spokesman Saeed Al Bahes as saying a committee has been formed to investigate the incident and take measures against the teacher.
