A Sudanese father pardoned the killer of his son and visited him in prison in Saudi Arabia nearly 15 years after he was sentenced to death for murdering the boy.

Abdullah Al Numair, a shepherd in Sudan, had rejected several mediation bids to persuade him to pardon the African killer in return for SR300,000 (Dh300,000) blood money, according to the Saudi daily Okaz.

But Saudi human rights activists convinced him three months ago to come to Saudi Arabia so they will talk to him about the pardon.

“Finally he was persuaded to pardon the killer and refused to take blood money. He even visited the killer in prison,” the paper said in a report from the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah.

Under Islamic law, which is strictly enforced in Saudi Arabia, a convicted killer can escape execution and walk free if pardoned by the victim’s family in return for blood money, which is officially set in Saudi Arabia at SR300,000 for a Muslim victim. However, the victim’s relatives are allowed to demand any sum.
