Eight Asian construction workers were hospitalised in Bahrain after suffering from heat stroke while working during the hot mid-day hours despite a four-hour ban imposed by authorities, a local daily said Thursday.

"The eight were admitted to hospital suffering from heat exhaustion because of long hours of work in the hot weather under the sun," Alayam daily said, quoting Dr Ali Ibrahim, Deputy Director of the Salmaniya Medical Centre in Manama.

He said six of them were discharged after receiving treatment while two would remain in hospital for more medication.

"There has been an increase in such cases since the start of summer...we urge all construction companies to abide by the Ministry of Labour's law."

Bahrain, the UAE and other Gulf countries have banned summer work during noon peak heat hours at construction sites for safety reasons.

Dr Ibrahim said heat strike increases body temperature to 41 degrees, and causes red and dry skin, muscular spasms, rapid heart beat rates, giddiness, nausea, loss of balance, headache and possible trances.
