A Saudi farmer is showing what he believes to be the world’s shortest camel at a beauty contest for the desert animal being held in the Gulf kingdom.

The camel is only 1.5 metres high and it emerged as the main attraction at the event, which was launched two weeks ago in the northereastern town of Umm Ruqaiba, scene for the region’s main annual camel pageantry contests involving thousands of camels from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.

"It is a dwarf female camel not exceeding 1.5 metres high…she is the shortest living camel in the world,” its owner said, quoted by Saudi newspapers.

"But she lives like other camels live regarding food, movement and behavior…her little size made it the main attraction at this show…many visitors just wanted to be photographed with her.”

Newspaper said camels worth nearly SR500 million ($133m) were sold during the first two weeks of the show.
