Worm living in man’s shoulder removed

Doctors in Saudi Arabia removed a live worm that had lived under the skin of a man’s shoulder for years and caused him excruciating pain and swelling.

A private hospital in the western town of Makkah had earlier mistakenly diagnosed the swelling as an abscess and prescribed antibiotics and creams for the patient, Sabq newspaper said.

An X-ray at another hospital showed there was a worm beneath the skin and decided to operate on the man to remove it.

“Doctors at the charity society for the treatment of chronic diseases extracted the worm after a small surgery and it was alive and had been there for a long time…after the operation, the man’s shoulder began to heal and he no longer felt pain,” the paper said, quoting doctors.
