Senior official gets 6-month suspended jail

A court of appeals in Abu Dhabi sentenced a director of a government department to six months suspended jail after he was convicted installing secret cameras a women-only section at the department.

His Emirati assistant got the same sentence while an employee from another Arab country was ordered deported from the UAE.

The appeals court confirmed a previous sentence by a court of first instance which found the three guilty of violating the privacy of women at the department in Al Ain.

During hearings, the public prosecutor demanded tough punishment of the three on the grounds they committed an ethical crime which violates UAE social values.

The three denied such charges, saying the camera was not secret and could be seen by everyone. They said cameras were also installed in the other sections of the department and that they are intended to ensure discipline.
