Sharjah hospital successfully treats new born for rare disease

University Hospital Sharjah (UHS) has admitted a rare critical case of a one-day old newborn with pulmonary hypertension and apnea, resulting in severe hypoxia and a drop in oxygen saturation of 100 per cent, with generalised cyanosis.

The hospital handled the case with great efficiency, discharging the patient in stable condition within 12 days. This increases the number of rare cases the hospital handled to four in the past few months.

Before being admitted to the University Hospital, the newborn was rejected by several medical institutions, citing the complexity of its case. Upon expressing its will to manage this case, the UHS admitted the newborn to the ICU, where it was treated with supplements, vasoconstrictors, and nitrous oxide gas. The latter helped raise oxygen saturation from 24 per cent to 95 per cent in 30 minutes only, owing to its effect in reversing spasm in the pulmonary artery, allowing oxygen to flow freely to the rest of the body. The newborn was also given antibiotics for 10 days.

Professor Hakam Yaseen, Medical Director of the UHS and head of the medical team who treated the newborn, said: "In rare cases, some newborns are born with pneumonia and sepsis. These conditions result in pulmonary hypertension, causing the infant to suffer from hypoxia (low oxygen level in the blood). The proper intervention is to provide the infant with oxygen immediately."
