Sharjah registers 1,100 traffic offences a day

Having recently launched a year-long traffic campaign to reduce the number of accidents and accident-related deaths in the city, the number of traffic violations registered in Sharjah between December 15 and 20 amounted to 6,620, according to Al Khaleej newspaper.
That works out to more than 1,103 violations a day. Major General Hamid Mohamed Al-Hadidi, Director-General of Sharjah Police, vowed to continue emphasising vehicle safety and checking the behaviour of drivers not committed to traffic rules.
He added that the campaign, which was launched recently, is aimed at tightening traffic rules in the streets of the emirate and the application of laws against offending drivers.
The irregularities included more than 40 articles of the list of violations to the traffic law relating to non-compliance with traffic rules and exceeding the speed limit on roads, and irregularities relating to the safety of vehicles and violations related to the safety of drivers and passengers.
Violation of the seat belt was ranked first among the irregularities (1345 violations) and the use of mobile phone while driving came second as amounted to 388 offences.
