Skywatchers Lookout: 'Strawberry Moon' is ripe

A runner makes his way along a trail on a butte in front of the "supermoon" at Papago Park in Phoenix, Arizona. A "supermoon" will light up Saturday's night sky, in a once-a-year cosmic show, overshadowing a meteor shower from remnants of Halley's Comet, the U.S. space agency NASA said. The Moon will seem especially big and bright since it will reach its closest spot to Earth at the same time it is in its full phase, NASA said. (REUTERS)

June’s strawberry moon will be visible in full at night, although technically it reaches its fullness in eastern North America at midday US time.

June’s full moon is dubbed “strawberry” because Native American tribes knew it as a signal to gather ripening fruit during the short growing season, according to Almanac.com.

But in other areas of the world, where it’s not a time to harvest, June’s moon carries different monikers. In Europe, it’s called a “rose moon”, but also goes by the names “honey moon” or “mead moon.”

Hopefully the 40 percent chance of rain forecast by the National Weather Service in Palm Beach County for tomorrow night will still allow us a look.
