Spotted: 'Typhoon' in the Rain... Weather shuts Global Village, Dubai Airshow, schools; event updates

Global Village has announced that the park will be closed to visitors today (Thursday, November 21) due to the unpredictable weather conditions forecast in Dubai. 

The decision was made based on consultations with the Civil Defense and Dubai Police and in accordance with the National Center of Weather Forecast.

Global Village and the respective authorities have taken this decision for the safely of visitors and exhibitors working on site at Global Village. Global Village management will continue to closely monitor the weather conditions as well as the reports from the relevant authorities.

The closure decision is made for today only and any updates regarding tomorrow, Friday 22nd  November, will be shared later, it said.

Dubai Airshow shut

The Dubai Airshow has been temporarily closed due to adverse weather conditions.

A spokesperson for the Airshow told Emirates 24l7 that the situation is being monitored and a decision on the schedules will be taken in a while.

“Dubai Airshow is closed for now, we advise people to refrain from travelling to the site.  Further information will follow shortly,” said Gemma L’Appanna from F&E Aerospace.

“As of last night only the US Department of Defence had moved their aircrafts out of the tarmac to the maintenance areas. There are a few other aircrafts that have left the show as prescheduled,” the spokesperson said. The five-day show is scheduled to end today.

Schools shut down

All Dubai schools have been asked to close down and students have been asked to return home.
 
Spokesperson from KHDA confirmed the news to Emirates 24|7 and stated that the Ministry of Education has issued a notice that schools should remain closed due to bad weather.

Parents have been informed of the sudden closure and some have rushed to take their children home.

Those students who travel to school by bus will be dropped home.

Some schools are hesitating to take a call before official notice.

Star International Al Twar made an official announcement that the school will be closed at 11am and parents have been informed.

The staffer said, "Students will be dropped home in case they travel by the school bus."

A parent whose child studies at DPS Sharjah informed that they received a text message from school stating about the closure of school due to the bad weather.

The text messge states: "As per the ministry instruction the school is being closed due to bad weather.  Students using school transport will be sent home. Kindly collect them from their bus stops."

In case of private commuters, parents are instructed to collect their wards from school as soon as possible.

Uptown School in Mirdiff has asked parents to collect their children as the school is closing due to the bad weather.

When Emirates 24|7 contacted the school, the operator confirmed the news.

EISM school management said: “There is a severe storm approaching Dubai and the Ministry of Education has instructed all schools to evacuate.  Will parents please immediately come to school and collect children from the classroom. 

“Please sign out your child.  Buses will be leaving at 11:00am.  We will keep your children safe until you arrive to collect them.  Please pass this message on to any parents that you know who may have not received this.”

Winchester School sent an sms saying that school will be closed today as advised by KHDA due to impending worsening weather. Buses will leave at 10:30am. Parents who pick up from school come ASAP.

The Oxford School said: “Due to bad weather condition and the possible traffic congestion, parents can collect their ward from the school if they wish to. The school buses will play as the usual time.”

Flights on schedule

Flights departing and arriving from all major international airports in the UAE are however on schedule.
An official of Abu Dhabi International Airport told Emirates 24/7 that flights departing from Abu Dhabi are operating as scheduled and there have been no cancellations or delays due to weather.

“However we do have some delays of flights arriving into the UAE. But these delays are from the port of departure and got nothing to do with the weather here,” the official said.

Similarly flights to and from Dubai and Sharjah airports too continued to operate normally.

Beat Diabetes Walkathon postponed

The fifth Beat Diabetes Walkathon, which was due to be held tomorrow, has be postponed to Friday, 6 December at Zabeel Park.
Landmark Group, organisers of the walkathon, announced the 5th edition of the Community Awareness event, has been postponed on account of inclement weather conditions in Dubai.
All pre-registrations for the walkathon will remain valid for the new date.
