Colombo: The officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) seized 15,000 kg of adulterated chilli powder from a grinding mill store at Sedawatte July 21.

The raid was conducted when the stock of chilli powder was being prepared to be sold for about Rs4.5 million targeting the upcoming festive season.

The chilli powder was found to have been mixed with flour, powdered bread crumbs and coloured with fabric dye.

About 2,000 kg of powdered bread crumbs and another 3,000 kg of low quality pepper powder were also seized.

CAA said the proprietor of the grinding mill would be produced in court soon. They said the racket had been going on for a long time.

Trade Minister Johnston Fernando had instructed the CAA Chairman to carry out raids regularly so as to nab errant vendors who sell food items which were unsuitable for human consumption, especially during festive seasons

Raids see 1,020 school canteens below standards

Colombo: Several school canteens in Sri Lanka have been found selling unhygienic food.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) raided 1,020 school canteens countrywide so far this week and 84 canteen operators have been fined by courts for selling unhygienic food.

Co-operatives and Internal Trade Ministry spokesman Nipun Ekanayake told ‘The Island’ that 167 canteen owners had been ordered to maintain hygienic standards if they were to avoid prosecution.

Ekanayake said that the CAA officials had raided the Royal College canteen and its owner had been fined for using rotten potatoes.

He said the canteen manager had been produced before Maligakanda Magistrate and fined Rs 8,000.

"We raided the canteen of Thurston College as well," Ekanayake said, adding that CAA officials had found juices made from rotten fruits.

Ekanayake said Minister Fernando had ordered raids on school canteens following complaints from parents.
