Three Sri Lankans have been evacuated from Yemen to safety and five others are currently on their way to Djubouti via sea, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who added that the three Lankans had reached Djubouti on board an Indonesian boat, ‘Ada Derana’ reported.

Following requests made by the Sri Lankan Government, India and China have agreed to assist in evacuating Lankan nationals stranded in Yemen.

Officials on Thursday said New Delhi has agreed to help rescue 67 Sri Lankans trapped in Yemen which will begin soon after the completion of Indian nationals’ airlift.

Lankan high commissioner in New Delhi and the ambassador in Muscat, Oman have been instructed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith P. Perera to coordinate the evacuation process while liaising with India’s Ministry of External Affairs and its embassies in Muscat and Sanaa.

Around 75 to 100 Sri Lankan expatriates, including students, are reported to be stranded in Yemen.

Lankan nationals live mainly in the capital Sanaa and other towns such as Hodeida, Aden and Mukalla.
