3 women escape rape by old metals trader

An old metal goods collector and a broker have been arrested in Bandaragama in Sri Lanka on the charge of raping a young woman and attempting to rape three others, the ‘Mirror’ newspaper has reported.

The four young women were brought in a van by the broker. One of them ran and escaped into a nearby forest.

Villagers living nearby saved a woman from the clutches of the suspects. Two of them were locked inside the van by the suspects when police arrived.

Couple held for gold smuggling

A Sri Lankan couple has been arrested at Chennai airport in India for trying to enter the country with 585 grammess of gold jewellery hidden on their bodies, the ‘Ada Derana’ reported.

The couple claimed that they had come to Chennai for fertility treatment at a specialty hospital in Vadapalani.
Chennai airport customs officials said the couple – Suppiah (38) and Latha Thanavel (28) – held life-long Indian visas and were frequent visitors to the country.

Officials noticed that the woman had concealed gold jewellery on her body while the couple were trying to clear customs after arriving in Chennai from Colombo on a Jet Airways flight at 4.30am.

The couple was unable to account for the gold jewellery when questioned.
