8-year-old girl raped, strangled to death

Police in Sri Lanka has arrested a 28-year-old man for raping and strangling an eight-year-old girl to death.

According to a report in the ‘Mawbima,’ the incident happened in Janabala village in Akmeemana on Wednesday September 16.

Police located the dead body in tea bushes with the help of neighbours.

Police believe the girl had been strangled with a wire cord which was found nearby. Her undergarment had blood stains.

The victim had returned home from school with her 12-year-old sister but the latter went out for tuition class after some time. Both her mother and father, a carpenter, had gone to work.

When the mother returned home around 5pm, the victim was missing. The mother lodged a complaint with the police at around 6.30pm.

The postmortem was held at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital on Thursday September 17 and the suspect, a neighbour of the victim, was arrested around noon on the same day.

Investigations revealed that after strangling the victim, the suspect carried the body with the wire cord around her neck to ensure that she was dead.

Police said a sniffer dog had gone to the suspect’s home and stopped near his bed.
