According to the complaint lodged with the Dehiwala Police, the girl had been with her lover aged 16 in Dehiwela where she was tricked into drinking a beverage laced with alcohol after which the he had sex with her.

Killer of witness in murder case arrested

The Sri Lankan killer of a witness in a murder case has been arrested, thanks to the untiring efforts of a police officer.

The body of N. Sathyaseelan, a father of four, was found floating in a reservoir a few months ago with his hands tied behind his back in Maddekanda, Kabaragala in the Balangoda area of the Sabaragamuwa province.

‘The Island’ reported on Monday that the OIC of the Crime Investigation Unit of the Balangoda police Inspector Shelton Uduwakage was unfazed though initial investigations drew a blank. His efforts were not in vain as he questioned everyone who had met the victim on the fateful day and one person came forward as an eye witness to the murder.

The witness said as he was walking along a road on the fateful day, two persons who were waiting on the road had ordered him to move away quickly and so he had become suspicious of them.

Hiding behind a bush, he observed  that one of them had struck Sathyaseelan on the head as he passed the place where the assailants were hiding.

Later, they had tied his hands behind his back and threw him into the reservoir.

Acting on the information, police arrested W. Kiritharan alias Suren, who is the main suspect in a two-year-old murder case  in which Sathyaseelan was the key witness.

Suren, who was on bail, had told Sathyaseelan on a number of occasions not to give evidence against him.

He has been remanded to police custody on the order of the Balangoda Magistrate.
