Businessman arrested over false declaration

A Keyzer Street businessman and his Wharf Clerk were arrested by the Customs Revenue Task Force (RTF) Tuesday, for importing accessories for four luxury vehicles, ‘The Island’ reported.

The accessories which were imported from Japan contained parts for a Toyota Hybrid car, two Toyota vans and a jeep valued at Rs. 15 million.

Before the officers of RTF had opened the suspicious 40-foot container to verify the declaration, the suspects had declared that the container comprised of 113 bicycles and two back-hoes.

Director, RTF, Mali Piyasena told ‘The Island’ that the suspects had imported the accessories from a businessman who had been blacklisted in Japan for the same offense on an earlier occasion.

He said the suspects in their custody were being questioned.
