A police constable hacked to death his girlfriend, a woman police constable, yesterday (Monday) with a sharp object on an overhead bridge at Lotus Road, Colombo opposite Sri Lanka Telecom in broad daylight.

The suspect, Nilantha Pushpakumara (30), who was from Walapane, Nuwaraeliya District was attached to the Moneragala police station in the Uva Province, has been admitted to Colombo National Hospital having consumed poison while trying to commit suicide.

The suspect has been ordered to be remanded till January 11 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate who visited the hospital and prison officials were ordered to provide security.

According to the police the suspect’s health condition was improving.

The tragedy had happened at around 7.15 am when the police woman constable was walking on the overhead bridge at the Lotus Road.

The deceased, 29-year old WPC Nadeeshani Madubashini (8029), was a resident of Bibile in Uva Province and she had been severely cut on the neck, hands and the chest.

She was a member of the Police Women’s Cricket Team and was attached to the sports unit of the Police Headquarters.

The incident had happened while she was on her way to the Police Field Force Headquarters grounds for practices.

She was staying in a police billet in Colombo Fort from where she used to travel daily for cricket practices.

Fort Police Crimes OIC Inspector Silogama told the Daily Mirror that a love affair which turned bitter would have led to this killing, according to eye witness statements.

About a year ago, a love affair had been developed between the two through a telephone conversation when he telephoned the victim for an official matter.

During the past few months the affair had turned bitter and Nadeeshani had planned to abandon her lover, according to The Island newspaper.

She had informed him of her decision which he had protested but she had told him not to talk to her or come to see her hereafter.

Nilantha who was in anger had taken a day’s leave pretending that his mother was sick and travelled to Colombo with the sharp object with the intention of killing her if there was no settlement.

He had waited on the overhead bridge from 6.30 am yesterday (7th) till Nadeeshani appeared and had had an argument.

When she was about to leave him, Nilantha had taken out the sharp object and had hacked her several times by holding her long hair.

Colombo Fort police were conducting further investigations.
