Couple falls into sewage pit, dies

Colombo: A couple in Sri Lanka died after falling into a sewage pit, while three others who attempted to rescue them are admitted in hospital after inhaling toxic gas, according to a report in ‘Lankadeep’.
 
Kapuge Doreen, 59, fell into the pit as the concrete slab cracked. Her husband, Noel Mangala Premawardena, 50, rushed to rescue her and fell unconscious inside the pit.
 
Three family members aged between 33 and 55 who tried pulling out the couple complained of chest pain and headache after inhaling toxic gas and was transferred to hospital.
 
Thereafter, neighbours lifted the couple out of the ditch but could not rescue them.
 
Embilipitiya police are investigating.
