Cyclone destroys makeshift houses of IDPs

Several makeshift houses put up by the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Tellipalai area in the Jaffna peninsula, had been devastated by the cyclone.

The cyclone that crashed on various coastal areas has also completely damaged a church at the fishing hamlet in Gurunagar, Jaffna.

‘Ceylon Today’ reported that according to the Jaffna Government Agent, Suntharam Arumainayagam, 42 internally displaced families are now temporarily housed in a temple in Tellipalai after being affected by the extreme weather conditions.

The cyclone had damaged 200 houses partly and eight houses completely, he said.

Thousands of plantain trees had been destroyed in the Neerveli area well known for its cultivations.

Troops were deployed to clear the roads in various places in Jaffna and assist the civilians affected by the inclement weather.

During the past several months Jaffna experienced a heat wave under the scorching sun when unexpectedly there was a cyclone and heavy showers.

The cyclone damaged houses and cultivations, on several areas in the Eastern Province where due to the inclement weather, fishing villages, vessels and equipment in several coastal areas were also damaged.
