Drug barons allegedly contesting Lanka polls

Colombo: Sri Lanka is gearing for the general elections and it is alleged that at least 25 contestants are drug barons, according to local media reports.

Dr. Chameera Nilanga Samarasinghe, Chairman, Dangerous Drugs Control Board, has sought security as, he claims, there is threat to his life after he revealed the secret to some lawyers early in July.

Dr. Samarasinghe disclosed this at a meeting with a group of lawyers of the SLFP including  DP Mendis PC, and lawyer Sanjaya Gamage .

Following his disclosure he was asked by SLFP lawyers to also reveal to which parties the drug barons belong.

It is reported that no candidates of the UNP and JVP are included in his list.

Dr. Samarasinghe will forward the list the President and the President is expected to release the names.
