SRI LANKA: A speeding private bus proceeding to Colombo from Polonnaruwa knocked down and killed an bull elephant, which was crossing the road near the 33rd mile post at Minneriya on Monday night.

In the accident that took place around 8.30 pm, the driver and seven passengers too were injured and admitted to the Polonnaruwa hospital.

After hitting the male elephant, which was aged between 20 and 25, the driver had lost control of the bus and it had gone about 50 metres into the surrounding forest before coming to a halt.
