Exorcist and assistant rape young woman

SRI LANKA: An exorcist and his assistant have been remanded till June 15 by Kalutara Additional Magistrate for forcibly raping a 21-year-old young niece of an ailing woman in Bubulakanda area, ‘Lankadeepa’ reported.

Those remanded have been identified as, Nella Hennedige Wasantha Pushpakumara alias Sunimal, the exorcist and his assistant, Ganwari Sampath, both residents of Magalkanda in Maggona.

The ailing woman’s husband had requested the main suspect to conduct a ritual for his wife’s cure from the ailment and the suspects abused the young woman by deceiving the two males by sending them out from the home, having told them that if they reveal about the ritual, the woman’s ailment would increase, police said.

The exorcist had told the household that they should bathe and be clean except the sick woman.

Later, the main suspect had sent both the males out on the pretext of getting two lemons and thereafter, both the suspects had taken the girl into a room and raped her, police investigations revealed.

They had left the house after collecting their fees for conducted the ritual.

When the victim disclosed the incident to her husband on the following day, the main suspect was arrested and the other one surrendered, police informed the court.

Further investigations are conducted by Beruwala police.
