Girl, 17, forced into prostitution by 2 women

SRI LANKA: Officers of the Special Police Unit of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) have arrested two women for engaging a 17-year-old girl in prostitution and earning money, ‘Lankadeepa’ reported.

The arrested women were remanded after being produced before the Chilaw Magistrate Court and they were identified as, Siyaneguru Mallika de Silva (52, a resident of

Mudukatuwa, Marawila, Nattandiya and Warnakulasuriya Nalika Deepthi Fernando (50) from the same area.

A NCPA officer said when the suspects were about to be arrested, a crowd including women, attempted to assault them and the suspects were rescued with much effort.

After a complaint was filed by the mother of the victim, the women were arrested, the NCPA officer said, adding that the suspects had earned a big sum by engaging the girl in prostitution for more than a year.

The girl had been forced to entertain customers at hotels in Marawila by the women after they learnt that the girl was eight months pregnant.

NCPA said that the girl’s mother was employed abroad while the father was a labourer and the girl had been fallen victim of the women about a year ago.

The girl had related the story to her mother after she returned home and she had taken the girl to NCPA and filed a complaint.

NCPA officers are conducting further investigations.
