Girls think it's a 'plus point' to have a lover while still at school

A survey conducted by Sri Lanka’s National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has revealed that a vast majority of schoolgirls consider it is a ‘distinction’ to have a boyfriend while still in school.

The number of girls, who did not consider it a plus point to have a boyfriend, was far less than those who did, NCPA Chairman, Attorney-at-Law Anoma Dissanayake, told Ceylon Today.

She also said the trend of schoolgirls considering having a love affair as something to be proud of, is quite disappointing.

“Children should play when it is the time to play. When it is time to walk, they must walk. When children try to do things that we generally do in our adult life, then they mess up both their childhood and adulthood,” she said.

During the school going years, particularly when children are below 18 years, getting involved in love affairs can have irreversible repercussions for both children and their families, Dissanayake said, adding, “It can also give rise to a number of social issues.”

She advised schoolgirls to not get entangled in love affairs but focus totally on their studies and try to reach their educational targets.

“The parents of schoolgirls should also pay special attention to this aspect and be on the alert that their offspring stick to the course of their educational life and aspirations without wavering,” she added.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer said a large percentage of schoolgirls are sexually attacked or molested, mostly by their so-called lovers.
