Mobile phone fraudsters active in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan police has cautioned the public not to fall prey to conmen who were operating a scam via bogus SMS and mobile phone calls.

Police said the fraudsters pretended to be service providers and called on subscribers to deposit money in bank accounts to receive lottery prizes.

According to  complaints received by police stations countrywide, subscribers had received calls and SMS from scamsters informing them that they had won lotteries organised by their mobile phone service providers and they must deposit some money in a bank account to receive the winning prize.

Suspicious mobile phone users had lodged complaints with the police, police spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardana told ‘The Island’.

"The public should immediately check with service providers first if they receive such SMS or phone calls," he said.
