A bridegroom hit his bride after gripping her throat during a wedding ceremony at a hotel in Kamburupitiya in Sri Lanka, the local media reported.
The bride had invited the groom to dance to the music at the wedding on Friday November 7 and the groom, who was tired of facing photographers and was unwilling to step on to the podium, gripped the bride’s throat after assaulting her.
A large crowd saw the incident and the bride’s mother fainted after seeing it.
Later, the bride in her wedding dress accompanied her relatives to the Matara General Hospital where she was admitted for treatment after lodging a complaint with the police.
The groom was supposed to accompany the bride on Sunday November 9 for their ‘home coming’ ceremony at a hotel in Kandy. He came with a lawyer in the morning to the hospital to take the bride away but the bride refused to go with him.
The groom then lodged a complaint with the Weligama police which ordered the Women’s and Children’s Bureau to probe the incident.
