Husband pushes wife and child into sea

Police in Sri Lanka has arrested a 35-year-old man fleeing after attempting to kill his wife and 2-year-old child by pushing them into the sea from a cliff.

According to a report in the ‘Lankadeepa’, the incident happened on the night of Thursday September 17 at Mahapelana beach in Kosgoda.

Police said the woman saved herself but the child is missing. She is under treatment at Balapitiya base hospital for minor bruises.

The suspect was nabbed by villagers on Friday afternoon as he got off a bus at Kaikawala junction in Induruwa and handed over to the police.

Police said the suspect, a carpenter, was fleeing after taking Rs 30,000 from home, which had been collected by his wife to settle a loan.

On the day of the incident, the suspect, his wife and child left home at around 9pm in a push bicycle leaving their elder daughter asleep at home.

The wife related the story to her relatives after reaching home.

The police and navy personnel, who launched a search operation, found the missing child’s body on Friday evening.
